  • Gosforth Hall Hotel - Regular theme nights - including Medieval Banquets
Located on the quiet Western edge of the Lake District National Park, Gosforth Hall Hotel & Restaurant is only a few minutes drive from England's deepest lake, highest mountain and smallest church! Building of the Hall commenced in 1658, the year of Oliver Cromwell's death. The date of completion is not clear, although the date on the Coat of Arms situated in the bar is 1673. The hotel stands next to St Mary's Church with the famous 15ft-high Viking Cross. Many of the building's original features have been retained, in keeping with its Grade 2* listing.

The Hotel's non-smoking restaurant is open every Evening, food is also available in the bar or lounge in the Evenings and Wed to Sat Lunchtimes. Due to the popularity of the restaurant, booking is highly recommended. We take great pride in the food we offer - all home-cooked and based on fresh local produce. If you have any special dietary needs, just let us know and we will do our best to help.

The Hotel has 10 comfortable guest bedrooms, eight of which are en-suite. All rooms have tea- and coffee-making facilities and televisions. The Suite boasts a 4-poster bed, a giant en-suite bath and must be seen to be believed! This room proves popular as a bridal suite as well as for celebrations of special anniversaries or for guests just wishing to spoil themselves in this luxurious accommodation.

Retaining a number of the original features the Hall now operates as a comfortable family run Hotel. The Suite provides accommodation unique in this area, with a massive four poster and large oversize bath. All other en-suite rooms are well decorated, with TVs and coffee making facilities. The Hall has a Public Bar, cosy Lounge and themed Restaurant. The Menu provides a wide ranging selection of both Local specialities and International Cuisine. The Bar has had recent nominations for the Good Beer Guide, and with an excellent selection of Wines and Spirits you are assurd an enjoyable stay. Whatever your reasons for visitiing this beautiful area of the Lake District, the Gosforth Hall provides you with a unique place to stay where you will immediately feel that you have found your home from home.

    Bar / Lounge:

The bar offers a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, supported by a good range of ales and spirits, including locally brewed real ale. The bar is popular with both locals and visitors, especially when the real fire provides added warmth, following your return from exploring the near by fells. The fireplace is dominated by a plaster overmantle bearing the initials of the first owners of the hall, together with the date of 1673. Building actually commenced in 1658. The significant history will add interest to your visit and the present owners will be delighted to provide further factual and anecdotal information about the history of the building, over a quiet pint, of course.

    Restaurant:

Our Restaurant is gaining an enviable reputation. The excellent food selected from the expansive and imaginative menu is certain to delight those seeking superior cuisine at very reasonable prices. Our chefs add thier own distinctive art to the preparation of your meal, and take great pride in the food that they produce. A good range of quality wines compliments any meal selected.

The restaurant itself, which is the original Hall, provides an intimate, friendly and unhurried setting for your meal. Once booked, the table is yours for the evening. We therefore strongly recommend that you book your table during busy periods.

Group bookings can be taken, so why not celebrate those special occasions with us. Please phone to discuss your individual requirements, or use the on-line form on the "bookings" page of this site.

Originally the kitchen of the hall, the lounge has a fine fireplace and inglenook, with many masons marks and an original doorway leading to an impressive stone spiral staircase, built out as a turret. It has been renovated to provide an exceptionally relaxed reception and lounge area. When conditions require, you will be able to enjoy the real fire roaring below the massive sandstone arch. The lounge is an excellent place to spend a couple of hours in good company, or even to unwind with a good book.

    Local Area:

The Gosforth Hall Hotel is located in the charming village of Gosforth, conveniently located within easy distance of the beautiful and unspoilt Eskdale and Wasdale valleys. This makes it a perfect base for both walkers and travellers wishing to explore the region. The hotel itself provides an inviting and friendly atmosphere and, complemented by regular activities and entertainment, draws people from the local area as well as visitors.

The local area provides access to a number of interesting attractions and places to visit. We have listed some of these below, with our own views on those we have visited.

Situated on the edge of the scenic village of Silecroft within the Lake District National Park, Murthwaite Green Trekking Centre offers horse riding for all ages and abilities.

From a gentle walk through the village to an exhilarating gallop along the beach; we are open all year with rides going out most days.

A recently designed a website for a local heriatge tours and holiday firm in Cumbria called "Carvetii Iter" - Hadrian's Roman Lake District Tours.

Wasdale is an awesome valley with its deep lake, Wastwater, lying below towering screes. Its aspect changes with the weather: from calm blue serenity to surging waves running down the lake with the hills around slashed with storms. Whatever the weather it is a spectacular place and yet a quiet unpeopled one.

Gosforthvillage.co.uk is the offical website for the Cumbrian village of Gosforth. View photographs of the area and find out what's been going on, see travel information, details of local events and more.

Muncaster Castle is a must for visitors to the area. If you wish to visit all the gardens, which we recommend, it will be a full day out. Please remember to wear suitable footwear, though, as it can be muddy. The birds of prey display is spectacular, as is the owl sancutuary. All in all, a great day out for all the family and only 20 minutes drive from the hotel.

The La'al Ratty is described as the most beautiful train journey in England, and we are not about to disagree. This is another one for the family and again is less than 20 minutes from the Gosforth Hall Hotel.

Obviously, as the Gosforth Hall Hotel has a reputation for being haunted, we have quite an interest in spirits! A visit to the Rum Story in Whitehaven can turn out to be quite a staggering event. The website provides all the details.

From March to the end of October, the Lakeland Sheep and Wool Centre is more than just a gift shop. With a 300 seat arena, the displays provide a fascinating insight into an industry that was here long before tourism. Sheep dogs and lambs in the spring, a sure hit with the kids. Located on the Egremont Road outside Cockermouth, it's about 40 minutes drive from the hotel.

"The best collection of native sea life in Cumbria." Slightly over an hours drive from the hotel, but we do occasionally get rainy days!
