Bideford Devon South West England Bideford is an attractive town on the banks of the Torridge estuary. Following the building of a new bridge in the late 1980s it is not so busy with the traffic heading into North Cornwall able to bypass the town on the A39.
The old road has a lovely famous bridge crossing the Torridge linking the town of Bideford to its aptly named neighbour "East the Water".
This area of North Devon was home to the Author Charles Kingsley, and where he based his novel Westward Ho!, since that novel was published the town of Westward Ho! has grown and was in-fact named after the book!
Bideford still has some pleasant small streets and shops, although, in common with many towns in the UK, many of the older shops are struggling as the out of town shopping centres are developed. A large new development at Atlantic village on the A39 heading West out of Bideford has attracted many new stores.
The area around Bideford has some fascinating places to visit places such as Appledore, Instow and Clovelly have there own charm, whilst at Great Torrington, the Dartington Glass Factory has a visitors attraction and Factory shop.
Local attractions include The Milky Way Dairy,The Big Sheep,Tapely Park.Dartington Crystal, and RHS Rosemoor. The small port of Bideford is 2 miles away and is the departure point for trips to Lundy Island. The quaint fishing villages of Appledore and Bucks Mills are nearby as is the famous Clovelly. The Eden Park Project and Exmoor and Dartmoor make ideal day trips.
