The Hotel is dedicated to the memory of Francis O’Neill.

During the last quarter of the 19th Century, an ambitious undertaking to collect and publish Irish traditional music in Chicago was masterminded by the city’s Chief of Police, Chief O’Neill.

Francis O’Neill left home in Tralibane near Bantry at the age of 17 in 1865 to sail the world’s oceans.

After an adventurous life as a sailor, school teacher, shepherd and railroad worker, he landed in America’s mid-west where he married an Irish emigrant and joined Chicago’s police force.

His bravery and unswerving devotion to duty won him steady promotion through the ranks culminating in his appointment as Chicago’s Chief of Police in 1901.

O’Neill is remembered in musical circles as one of this century’s greatest collectors and publishers of Irish music, a topic he described as his ‘fascinating hobby’.

His books encompassed hundreds of previously unpublished dance tunes and melodies gathered from all available sources including immigrant musicians whom he also photographed and recorded on his phonograph.
